The first ready-to-eat hard-boiled eggs will hit supermarket shelves this week.
Manufacturers have spent years and thousands of pounds trying to work out how to keep a boiled egg fresh... and now they have finally cracked the problem.
The secret lies in the way the eggs are stored - with new vacuum-packing technology giving them a shelf life of 12 days. The free-range eggs will come in a pack of four and are available from Sainsbury's for £1.99.
Producers Noble Foods say the product will encourage more people to eat eggs.
Marketing boss Finn Cottle said: "Eggs are easily forgotten when menu planning at home. They can often be seen as a 'fridge-filler'.
"In offering an already boiled egg, we are providing busy consumers with an easy snack for packed lunches, or as an ingredient in salads and meals without having to allow for preparation time.
"We add nothing to the egg, there are no preservatives or anything like that.
The packaging has been specially designed to create a vacuum around the boiled egg which allows them to keep fresh and last longer."
However, as large free-range eggs normally cost 25p each in supermarkets, the 50p-a-time hardboiled price means shoppers will be paying twice as much for the luxury of having their eggs pre-cooked.

Oh my goodness, what will they think of next? What a ridiculous idea. What could be easier than boiling eggs?

Bit like the ready egg thing, they introduced. Agree what is the matter with some people, noone wants to do anything.
Next it`ll be ready buttered bread or something as daft
