Shannon's stepfather
The former partner of Shannon Matthews's mother has been sentenced to 20 weeks in jail for possessing child pornography.
Craig Meehan, 22, was found guilty at Dewsbury Magistrates' Court of 11 counts of possessing 49 indecent images of children on a computer.
He was cleared on one count of possessing an image on a mobile phone.
Meehan's computer was seized from the home he shared with Karen Matthews, 32, on Moorside Road, Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, by police searching for nine-year-old Shannon earlier this year.
District Judge Jonathan Bennett told Meehan they were "serious matters".
"The damage that has been caused to the children in these photographs is unimaginable.
"That is why Parliament regards these matters as so serious and why there is widespread social abhorrence of such offences. The most vulnerable in our society have to be protected."
Some of the photographs were so indecent they were categorised towards the highest end of the scale.
Meehan was made subject to a seven-year sexual offences prevention order which bans him from having photographs of children under 16 unless it is with permission of the child's parents.
He is also prohibited from downloading or viewing any image of children, except for family photos. Access to websites relating to children was also barred under the order.
Twenty weeks is nothing but his reputation (such as it was) is in tatters and he'll probably have to leave town when he gets out of jail. Hope it's a lesson to others who think looking at these pics on a computer is a "victimless crime".

I agree it`s hardly a sentence, and noone would have known if poor Shannon hadn`t been taken.

Re: Shannon's stepfather
The stepfather of schoolgirl Shannon Matthews will receive round-the-clock police protection after he was convicted of being a pervert who downloaded child pornography from the internet.
Craig Meehan, 22, was jailed for 20 weeks by a district judge today for possessing obscene images of children, but he was immediately set free because he has already spent more than that on remand awaiting trial.
He was driven from Dewsbury Magistrates Court in the company of his mother to a secret location and will be guarded by police at taxpayers' expense 'for the immediate future' because of fears he could be attacked.
Bloody disgusting, why should we pay for that perverts protection
