DS wrote:EastEnders star Jo Joyner has admitted feeling "disappointed" with many of her character's plots.

The actress revealed that she did not enjoy playing Tanya Branning on the BBC One soap until the character started to take centre stage.

"I have to be honest, in the past I've been a little bit disappointed with the way things have gone for Tanya," Jo told the Daily Star Sunday. "I really didn't think she'd be so mumsy. And I don't feel like I've made much of an impact since I've been in the show.

"People always laugh when I say that. It's because I've been involved in some of the soap's biggest plots. I guess I'm just not used to being in a show as big as EastEnders. You just don't realise the impact it has."

Joyner, who has appeared in the soap since June 2006, claimed that Tanya's potential was wasted until she discovered her husband Max had cheated on her.

"When I first arrived in the Square they didn't really know what was going to happen to Tanya," she explained. "I spent a year just being Max's wife. But then things really took off when the affair was exposed. I loved the way Tanya took her revenge by burying him alive."

A Walford insider promised: "We've got huge plans for her character. And she's got the biggest storyline of the year to look forward to. Obviously we can't say too much but it's going to be explosive."

Oh another explosive storyline Rolling Eyes There must be something being kept under wraps because so far there is nothing to indicate anything major happening. Just the same old affair revealed, except this time it wasnt an affair just a one night stand between Jack and Roxy.

I think thats another reason why Corrie takes the higher ground, not all of their major storylines revolve around sex, whereas EE cant seem to keep their minds out of the gutter.

I can't believe any actor would have loved such a pathetic and out-of-character storyline. We'll probably have to wait for her to leave EE before she can say what she really thought about it. Wink

Are we supposed to believe she had no idea what was in store for her character? Sue Tully knew right from the start that she was going to be a schoolgirl mum two years ahead, but Jo Joyner was "surprised" at her character's direction for the first year?

Do they think we're stupid?

Actually I could quite imagine that the writers dont think that far ahead now. When EE first started the storylines were imaginative, and you can imagine them sat round with storyboards years in advance.

Now the drivel they come out with seems like it was written the day before.

Yep. Very Happy

I agree with Lou that they probably don't have any real long-term plans for characters. I would hope that is the case otherwise the people who come up with the storylines are even worse than I thought. Mind you if they are anything like the "insiders" that keep leaking to the media that the upcoming storylines promise to be "explosive" then they are certainly lacking in imagination.

I'm surprised she was disappointed that Tanya's mumsy. Tanya came into the show with two kids. What did Joyner think she was going to be like?

Maybe she was hoping for a Dawn style character who prefers partying to Summer, or a hard nosed business woman who farms her kids out to nannies or day care for most of the day.

I dunno, Dawn and Roxy both came into the show as single women who found themselves saddled with no boyfriend and an unplanned pregnancy. That, to me, suggests a different sort of character to one who comes in married with two kids. I also think what she said about not liking how Tanya wasn't making an 'impact' before the affair was a touch arrogant. Since the new year, Tanya's been on screen more than anyone except for Jack. Barely a week goes by that we don't see her. Is that what Joyner wanted all along? Because that's not how EE should be. People get tired of characters like that very quickly. God knows I'm tired of the Brannings and their ongoing saga. I'm not very happy to hear that they're still going to be featuring heavily at Christmas.

I dont think they have to be on screen a lot to make an impact, just have decent storylines. Take the Masoods, they've barely been in the show compared to the likes of the Mitchells, Beales and Brannings, but for me they are making the biggest impact on the show. But they've have good storylines, not ones that relate around sex.

I dont think Tanya made any sort of impact on the show until last christmas because before that she was peripheral to the Max and Stacey affair and had very little to do in the show. She needed her own good storyline really.

lol! You're right.

I also agree about the EE habit of featuring the same characters all the time. It drove me nuts that the Beales were never off our screens for more than a year, with one big storyline after another. Now it's the same with the Brannings.
