Selfish Dads Empty Selfish Dads

With the exception of Masood, all the dads on EE are completely selfish.

  • Max - an obvious one, put his needs before his family and is still doing it now by putting his need to get one over on his ex and his brother before sorting things out for his kids

  • Jack - doesnt appear to be in contact with his daughter at all despite the invention of the telephone and internet

  • Jase - putting Dawn before Jay, and still doing so by putting himself in danger despite the fact if anything happens to him Jay would be left without a family.

  • Phil - doesnt care about what Ben wants, just wants a 'macho' son

  • Ian - enough said!! Puts himself before everyone

  • Billy - always puts his pride before his family

The only other one who could be classed as unselfish I suppose is Ricky, but he hasnt interacted much with Liam since their return, apart from the school scene, and a couple of others.

Does seem that way, doesn`t it, I do agree about Masood,
Even Archie Mitchell appears that way, from what we`ve seen of him

Selfish Dads Empty Re: Selfish Dads

EE has a bad track record with dads. Max is hailed as a superdad yet we saw once again how nothing really matters to him as much as getting his own way. Demanding to talk to Tanya about the kids, then deliberately scuppering the talks by bringing Ronnie, it's just exactly what Max would do.

I think Billy's quite a good dad. Not perfect, he did put his pride before their wellbeing when Mrs Patel evicted them, but I think when push comes to shove his kids will come first. Until the EE writers decide to change his emotions anyway. Rolling Eyes

I'm quite sure the writers don't mean Jack to be the useless dad he seems to be. I believe it's just another example of them not crediting the viewers with any intelligence and not expecting anyone to question Jack's continued absence from Penny's life. It's probably because the character is featuring so strongly in big storylines at the moment, so they can't have him nipping off to France. But they could have mentioned a few times like "where's Jack?" "Oh, he's gone to see Penny for a couple of days" or something like that. At the moment it's like his daughter has ceased to exist. But I think the scenes a few months ago when Penny came to visit were supposed to show that Jack has pulled down the walls that existed between him and Penny due to his guilty conscience. It's just too bad the writers forgot about it.

Ian and Phil are equally useless. The strange thing is, Ben adores Phil and wants to please him, yet Ian's kids think he's an idiot.

Jase is a big disappointment. He looked like being a really good dad despite his inexperience but I think he's blown it.

You could be right about Billy, in the main he does try his best, unfortunately he gives up way to easy when things are put in his way.

I thought Jase would be much better than he has turned out. The turning point was when Jay said to him 'its Dawn or me' and I thought he'd pick Jay, but then the next scene showed Dawn moving in and Jay has been against her ever since (except for the brief scenes involving the knifer's mum). Jase had been out of Jay's life for so long that nothing should have come between them, he should have been crawling on his knees to make up for all the years he'd lost.

I think they mean for Jack to be a bad dad. In fact, I think they might mean for him to be more than that. I can't remember which episode this was in exactly, but I think it was the one where Max went over to the house to talk to Tanya about the kids. They ended up fighting, but at the end of the episode, Tanya asked Max to come to lunch so that they could talk. Then she said Jack had to come too, and the episode ended with Max phoning Ronnie. Anyway, the fight in the house happened because Jack was there, and Max had an argument with Jack and and in the midst of all the shouting, Max yelled something along the lines of how Jack wasn't to lay a hand on his kids. Promptly after that, Max got ejected from the house. He yelled it when he was angry, and Jack was shouting at the same time, so Tanya didn't pay much heed to it, but I thought it was a bit of a strange thing to say. And Tanya has recently shown suspicions over Jack and Penny. I wonder if Jack is dangerous, if he has a tendency to put other people in danger, and that's what they're trying to convey. Also, when he wanted to bring his weights to the house, and saw no apparent reason why that would be dangerous for Oscar. I wonder if Jack's reckless, and they're setting up for Tanya's kids to be hurt - physically - by him.

I thought we were initially supposed to believe Jack had molested his daughter. To be told the bald facts "he's not allowed to be alone with her" suggested exactly that, it's definitely what Phil thought when he used it against Jack. Now that we know what happened, it makes absolutely no sense. No court would insist he couldn't be alone with the child.

I hadn't considered what J'adore's saying but it seems quite possible they're going to make Jack responsible for an (accidental?) injury to one of Tanya's kids. Whatever happens, this happy family act of Jack, Tanya and the kids won't be allowed to continue.

I must have missed the bit about weights, what was that?

When Jack was talking about moving his stuff into Tanya's place, she told him he couldn't bring his weights with him cos Oscar would be crawling about and might pull them on top of him. Jack looked a bit peeved but shrugged and agreed. I thought it was just a short scene to show that Jack hadn't really thought it through, that he was giving up a bachelor existence where he has to please nobody but himself and taking on another life where he has four other people to consider. Maybe the weights will come back to haunt him or maybe they won't be mentioned again.

I would have thought Jack had enough cash to join a gym anyway Wink

Yeah there have been a few hints that Jack might not have thought it through, the scene with Ricky for instance. Although that might have been a precursor to Ricky renting out Jack's old flat.
