Rose Tinted Glasses
Looking at the characters that have returned, I wonder if people look on Eastenders Past with rose tinted glasses. Were they actually any good back then, or did we just think they were good because the general quality of TV was poorer then, and now we expect more.
For example, Claires return was horrendous, the actress couldnt act, the character had no place in the square, the only thing Claire has going for her was her ample chest.
Bianca, I think I recall one episode when she wasnt screeching, and let's face it thats no different to how she was, the Ricckkaaayy screech turned the character into a caricature the first time around. And now she's a caricature with a humongous chip on her shoulder and criminal tendancies.
Den, well the most ridiculous comeback of all time (barring the Bobby Ewing in the shower escapade). Not only was the story stupid beyond belief, but Leslie Grantham couldnt seem to pull off any of the scenes he was asked to do. So was the Den of old just elevated to icon heights because EE was new and different, and his ilk and never been seen before, because it seems unlikely that an actor could lose his skills so dramatically.
Grant, again he flopped when he returned last time. Yet Ross Kemp has succeeded in other avenues, so is it because returnees just dont really care because they've 'been there, done that'?
Will we look back in 20 years time and think 'oh my goodness, did we really think they were good' about the likes of Shirley, The Masoods etc

Re: Rose Tinted Glasses
Den's return might have been a success if the actor hadn't misbehaved and needed punishing. OK it got a bit silly with the "somebody get Den Watts!" eppy like he was some kind of superhero rather than a tall gangly former landlord with a liking for young girls.
Clare's return was doomed from the start, as is anyone brought in solely to increase the "tits and arse" factor. If you start off playing to the lowest common denominator and acres of cleavage is substituted for acting ability or gripping storylines, the only way is down.
I don't hate Bianca as much as others do, though I can see why she annoys so many people. I like her family though and I think they all work, especially the fantastic Maisie Smith who is already a star.
Grant's return was a flop because they hooked him up with Jane, who he would never have looked twice at unless it was to say "a cuppa tea and a bacon sarnie". I love Grant though and I'd like to see him back with a decent storyline especially now that we've seen signs of Phil's jealousy over his brother. That was never noted before, the two men were always very close. They came through the Sharon affair closer than ever, even if the woman was ostracised for a while because of it.

I dont think EE will ever live that line down Its possibly the worst line ever written in any soap :rofl:HiJo wrote:OK it got a bit silly with the "somebody get Den Watts!" eppy like he was some kind of superhero rather than a tall gangly former landlord with a liking for young girls.
