At first glance I thought 'thank goodness a bit of sense at last', because the mother had been attacked quite badly. But then when I read on and it said the girl had bruises on her bottom I thought that the mother would have to smack her pretty darned hard to bruise her bum.

I think that if as a parent you are faced with a 14 year old who has problems with drink, drugs and sex,(not to mention violence), isn't it a bit late for bottom smacking? Ten years ago, maybe, but if your teenager thinks it's ok to headbutt you and stab you in the thigh with a pair of scissors discipline must have flown out of the window a long time ago. This sounds more like mum and daughter fighting.

I'm definitely on the mother's side. That little madam deserved to have somebody's boot up her bottom, and a "sore" bruised bum is no comparison to a stab wound. If, as the article says, the mother had spent years trying to sort out the girl's problems it seems like she resorted to violence as the last straw. The authorities are far too much on the side of these awful kids, they're not all from bad homes and this one doesn't seem to be. To headbutt her mother and stab her shows that that the girl could not be reasoned with, and probably would only understand that if you hurt someone physically you'll get hurt right back, which she certainly deserved.

The girl definitely has problems and if there are other younger children in the family, I'd seriously think about sending her away. If she can stab her mum she could easily kill a younger sibling. It's very sad though and I hope someone can get the girl back on track and put this family together again because they don't seem like the usual feckless types we hear about.
